When a person takes bayah, he is handing his heart over to the Shaikh. Now he’s plasticine in the Shaikh’s hands, the Shaikh will mould him and shape him. Does plasticine protest against the child that shapes it? No because it’s soft and willing to change! Likewise we need to become soft and willing to change, otherwise, how will we ever attain closeness to Allah and the jannah we crave for?
So like herbal medication, islah will sort out the root problems in our lives. But for this to happen, we must take the knocks in life with humility and sincerity, allowing our hearts to be totally shaped in the hands of an upright Shaikh. That’s when the real change will happen.
“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves” (Quran, 13:11)
