Nabi ﷺ accepted Muawiyah (RA) as one of his scribes who wrote down the verses of the Qur’an (recorded in Sahih Muslim). Al-Mizzi stated that among the scribes of Nabi ﷺ, Zaid ibn Thaabit (RA) and Muawiyah (RA) were most devoted to write for Nabi ﷺ. They considered it as a duty (recorded in Tahdib al-Kamal).
Nabi ﷺ once made dua for him saying “O Allah, make Muawiyah (RA) a means of guidance and make him one who is on guidance and give people guidance through him” (recorded in Majmau Zawaaid).
One day, Muawiyah (RA) was riding with Nabi ﷺ on the same conveyance. He was sitting behind him holding on to him. How fortunate they were, to have been blessed with the opportunity to be so close to Nabi ﷺ! Nabi ﷺ asked him that O Muawiyah (RA), which part of your body is touching me? He responded that my chest is touching your back. Nabi ﷺ made dua that may Allah bless you with an understanding of Deen.
One day Nabi ﷺ came home to his wife, Umm habibah (RA). She was the sister of Muawiyah (RA), making him the brother-in-law of Nabi ﷺ. That day, he happened to be visiting her. Upon seeing the siblings together, Nabi ﷺ asked Umm Habibah (RA) whether she loved Muawiyah (RA). She replied in the affirmative. Nabi ﷺ said, “Allah and his Rasul ﷺ definitely love Muawiyah (RA)” (recorded in Tabarani).
Abdullah Ibn al-Mubarak (RA) said, “He who looks towards him (i.e. Muawiyah (RA)) in disregard, we accuse him of misguided opinion in the Sahaaba (RA)”. A person asked Ibn al-Mubarak that who is better; Muawiyah (RA) or Umar ibn Abdul Aziz (RA)? He answered, “The dust that entered Muawiyah’s nose when he accompanied the Prophet ﷺ is better than Umar ibn Abdul Aziz (RA)” (recorded in Al bidayah wal nihaya).
