Instagram Influencers

I was recently informed about a Muslim sister who has a large following on Instagram. Her platform is used for comedy and mocking others. Due to her popularity, many businesses in South Africa pay to advertise their businesses on her page. A brother told me that she posted XYZ on her Instagram account last week, and such and such video yesterday. He seemed very informed. I said that brother, please excuse me for asking, I was simply unaware. But it seems like you an ardent follower! How do you know so much? He responded that no, I just check it out sometimes.

By checking it out, we are adding to the problem. How can we rebuke her in public but support her in private, by following and watching her videos? This increases her popularity. We cannot claim this to be a problem and then add to the problem. Such behaviour is hypocrisy. Nabi ﷺ has warned us that “من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم – Whoever imitates a people is one of them” (Abu Dawud).

It is best to simply ignore these “Instagram Influencers” for they have no valuable influence, except towards sins under the guise of comedy. This influence will inhibit the growth of your Imaan. Nabi ﷺ has strongly advised us to avoid bad company. In today’s era, bad company must also be avoided online. Otherwise we will be held accountable on the day of Judgement. Therefore, unfollow and do not watch them. Let them become unpopular and eventually, the hype will die down. While doing this, ensure that you do not look down on them. Allah can raise whoever He wants, we have no right to look down on one of His slaves. Instead, include them in your prayers, wish the best for them, and do not add to their wrongdoings by watching them. May Allah guide us all, aameen.
