6 points to be wary of when doing Qurbani

Here in South Africa, on Eidul Adha it is exciting to visit the farms and purchase our Qurbani animals. The enthusiasm to do Qurbani is beautiful and commendable. Our akaabireen would buy animals one year in advance. They would keep it and then do Qurbani the next year.
However, for the Sahaaba رضي الله عنهم they would always have animals with them grazing in their yard. Whenever they needed meat, they would simply sacrifice an animal and eat. It was normal.

Therefore, when Qurbani became waajib, they asked Nabi ﷺ, “What is Qurbani?” In other words, what makes it different to a normal sacrifice? Nabi ﷺ responded that it is the Sunnah of your father Ibrahim عليه السلام. Adam عليه السلام also did Qurbani but Ulama explained that the sacrifice of Ibrahim عليه السلام was specified due to the magnitude of His submission to Allah. He was willing to sacrifice his own son, that is not a small matter.

This shows that whilst we should get into the spirit of Qurbani, we must not overlook the purpose of it all. The purpose is to please Allah by sacrificing with taqwa. Allah himself says that the meat will not reach Him, only the taqwa in our hearts will. It is this taqwa that will lead to acceptance. Taqwa means to fear Allah and to follow His commands as a result of it. Below are five ways that we can ensure our actual Qurbani is done with Taqwa:

  1. Protect the gaze: In Qurbani it is makrooh for us to allow one animal to see another animal getting slaughtered. Many people are cautious of this, ensuring that the animals are kept separate. Yet we allow our inner animal to see our sister in laws, the neighbour’s daughter and other women. If we allow a sheep to see another it is makrooh, but if we look at another strange woman it is haram. The sheep will not get a sin but we will so be careful in this regard.
  2. Backbiting: This is common on Eid day, people backbite about the way someone does Qurbani. Remember we all have our own techniques. It is fine to disagree on a matter but there is no need to overstep the line and backbite.
  3. Boasting and drawing comparisons: People boast about how much they spend on their Qurbani animal, comparing it with others. Your wealth does not reach Allah, so why boast? Furthermore, wealth is merely a gift from Allah and He will give and take as He pleases. So what is there to boast about?
  4. Photography and videoing: Some people follow a fatwa that photography is permissible. Despite this, it makes absolutely no sense to video yourself slaughtering. Allah has allowed for us to take the life of an animal to fulfil our waajib Qurbani and to earn in the process. Why do we turn it into a movie, making videos and sharing it on Facebook, boasting about our knives and slaughtering techniques? Think about it, ask yourself the reason as to why you are recording. It is done to show off and showing off reduces our hard earned rewards.
  5. Salaah: Many people miss Salah on Eid day. Some present the excuse that blood fell on my shirt making it dirty.Thus I was unable to attend Jamat. However, we know that our clothes will get dirty in the process. Brother, what else were you expecting, a bunch of flowers? Obviously, when you slaughter blood will be all over the place. Therefore, carry a clean set of clothing, change and then attend the masjid. Do not miss Salah, that excuse is not valid in the sight of Allah.
  6. Anger: Many people fall prey to anger and even become vulgar while carrying out our Qurbani thus reducing our reward and adding to our sins. We should be wary not to fall prey to anger.

May Allah enable us to act with taqwa and may He accept our sacrifices as a result of it, Aameen.

The purpose of Qurbani: To develop Taqwa

The moon has been sighted, the days of Hajj have begun and it will be Eid soon inshaAllah. Currently, everyone is talking about Qurbani animals. Some people travel the length and breadth of their province looking for a special Qurbani animal to buy. That is good alhamdulillah but what is the main purpose of Qurbani? Allah speaks about it in the Qur’an where He says, “It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is your piety that reaches Him.” [Surah Hajj, Verse 37]

Therefore, our main goal is to develop taqwa over the next few days in the hope that we reach Eid with taqwa in our hearts. Our amal of Qurbani will then be judged according to this. So of course, we need a Qurbani animal and many of us are looking into this. However, the key question we must now ask is that how we develop this taqwa?

There are a number of ways we can do this. Firstly, be careful in how you speak. Avoid swearing, lying or deceiving people. Remember that our Allah can hear every word and the angels are recording it all. Secondly, lower and protect your gaze. Do not go to places where there will be free-mixing and fitna like the casinos. Always avoid them at all costs. Otherwise, we may be tempted towards haraam. Thirdly, protect your ears too from haraam. If your phone has a musical ringtone or alarm, change that. Why accrue a few seconds of sin every time your phone rings? It is easily avoidable. Fourthly, protect your mind too from haram thoughts like fantasizing.

Following these points will inshaAllah help you to build taqwa. Yes, it is not the most exciting part of Qurbani but it is certainly the most important part. Lastly, in these 10 days of Dhul Hijjah turn to Allah. I know my weaknesses and you know yours. Speak about them to Allah, seek His forgiveness and clean your heart. Sort out any disputes you may have with people. Sometimes that can be hard but as far as possible, be the better person. Give them the benefit of the doubt, seek forgiveness, close that chapter and move on. Why allow disputes to eat you up inside? Why allow it to corrupt your heart? Let it go.

This world is not a place of justice. In the Hereafter, Allah will grant you justice and that is when we will realise how insignificant, small and unnecessary most of our current worldly disputes are. At times disputes continue because the two opposing parties do not want to humble themselves and apologise. This is wrong. We must learn to humble ourselves before the humbler of all souls humbles us on the day of Judgement.

May Allah enable us to develop taqwa and accept our Qurbanis as a result of it, Aameen.

6 Ahadeeth: Forgiveness of sins for One performing Hajj

1. Hazrat Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrates that Rasulullah ﷺ said: “Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of pleasing Allah and does not utter any obscene words, nor commits any evil action shall return from it as free from sin as the day his mother gave birth to him.” (Bukhari #1521 and Muslim #1350 – Mishkaat 1/221)

2. Hazrat Ibnu Shammasah رضي الله عنه narrates that we were present around Hazrat Amr ibnul Aas رضي الله عنه when he was in his last moments. He cried for a long time and then related the story of his embracing Islam. He said: “When Allah caused Islam to enter my heart, I came to Rasulullah ﷺ and said: ‘O Rasulullah ﷺ! Put forth your hand that I may swear allegiance.’ When Rasulullah ﷺ stretched forth his hand, I withheld my hand. Rasulullah ﷺ inquired: ‘What troubles you O Amr?’ I said: ‘I want to lay down a condition that Allah shall forgive my previous sins.’ Rasulullah ﷺ replied: ‘O Amr, do you then not know that Islam washes away all sins committed in disbelief, and that the Hijrah washes away all sins committed before it, and that Hajj destroys all sins committed before it.” (Muslim #121)

3. Hazrat Abdullah ibn Umar رضي الله عنه narrates that Rasulullah ﷺ said: “When you meet a Haaji (on his way home) then greet him, shake hands with him and ask him to beg forgiveness of Allah on your behalf before he enters his home, because his dua for forgiveness is accepted since he is forgiven by Allah for his sins.” (Musnad Ahmad #5372, #6112, Mishkaat 1/223)

4. Hazrat Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrates from Nabi ﷺ that he said: “The Haaji and the one who makes Umrah are members of the delegation of Allah. If they make Duaa to Allah, Allah answers them. If they ask Allah for forgiveness, Allah forgives them.” (Sunan ibn Majah #2892, Mishkaat 1/222)

5. Hazrat Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrates that Rasulullah ﷺ once made Duaa: “O Allah, forgive the sins of the Haaji and forgive the sins of the one for whom the Haaji seeks forgiveness.” (Mustadrak al Haakim #1612)

6. It is reported that Hazrat Umar رضي الله عنه said: “The Haaji has the forgiveness of Allah until the 20th of Rabiul Awwal. The one who he seeks forgiveness for is also forgiven in this time. (Ithaaf)

Jannah is the reward for Hajj

Hazrat Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrates that Rasulullah ﷺ said: “Umrah to Umrah is an atonement for what is between it. There is no reward for a righteous Hajj except Jannah.” (Bukhari #1773, Muslim #1349, Mishkaat 1/221)

Does Nabi ﷺ know us all personally?

Nabi ﷺ was shown the whole Ummah. When we recite durood it is presented to him and he knows whose durood is being presented. Therefore, there is a great possibility that Nabi ﷺ knows us all personally. Furthermore, we know that he will be able to recognise us. Those who do whudu regularly, on the day of Judgement the limbs they washed will be shining. This will be our ID card to show we are followers of the Sunnah.

The Sahaaba رضي الله عنهم once asked Nabi ﷺ, “How will you recognise us on the day of Judgement?” He replied, “Say if a man has white-footed horses with white foreheads among horses which are pure black, will he not recognize his own horses?” They said; “Certainly, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!” He said, “They (my followers) will come with bright faces and white limbs because of Wudu and I will arrive at the Haud (Al-Kauthar) ahead of them.” [Muslim]

This hadeeth shows that those who commit to whudu and prayer, their shining limbs will make them recognisable to Nabi ﷺ. As a result of this, they will be blessed to drink from his hands. Nabi ﷺ further said that those who wish to increase their shine must do so. In other words, complete your whudu properly. After hearing this Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه started washing his hands up to his shoulders, rather than his elbow. This was due to his firm conviction in the words of Nabi ﷺ. Likewise, we must also make an effort to commit to prayer and whudu so that we can also be amongst the recognised ones.

Why can’t we invite non-Muslims to our weddings, funerals or the Ka’bah?

The question may come to mind – why can’t we invite non-Muslims to our Nikaahs and Janaazahs or to the Kabah? The reason why is because we need Allah’s mercy most in these times, but the disbelief in their hearts attract the wrath of Allah. Sometimes during a Janaazah, non-Muslims wish to attend to pay their respects. They can visit the home but if they attend the actual Janaazah, their presence will deprive the deceased of Allah’s mercy, as their presence attracts His wrath.

Janaazah and Nikaahs are worship and for that to be accepted, we cannot mix it with those that do not worship. Having said that, we must be extremely wise and careful in how we do this. Never hurt the feelings of others. Handle the situation with love and consideration, do not break hearts or burn bridges. The way to do this is to invite them at other times and to always treat them well. This is how we remain balanced – by fulfilling their rights but keeping our worship separate.

Understanding the power of the Qur’an

It is narrated from Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه that Nabi ﷺ said: “No people gather together in one of the Houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and studying it among themselves, except that sakeenah descends upon them and mercy envelops them, and the angels surround them and Allah mentions them amongst those who are with Him.”

Sakeenah means tranquillity which only descends upon the hearts of believers. Disbelieving hearts are weakened due to lack of faith and therefore, they cannot contain it. When we were children we used to buy peanuts from the shops. The shopkeeper would shape a newspaper into a cone and fill it with the nuts. However, if we were to buy tea or coffee and put it in that newspaper the liquid would seep through, softening and ripping the newspaper. It does not have the correct properties to contain liquids. Likewise, the hearts of disbelievers do not have the spiritual strength and qualities to contain this sakeenah.

This sakeenah causes believers to grow in faith. Allah says in Surah Fath, ayah 4 that it is He who sent down Sakeenah into the hearts of believers, that they may grow more in Faith. This growth in faith becomes apparent in the amal of a believer. One’s actions are then aligned with the Shariah and the Sunnah. That believer, once this special sakeenah descends, he will not want to remain a mediocre believer who puts in mediocre effort. He will become of those who pray Ishraaq, Awabeen and Tahajjud, and those who exert themselves in their worship and efforts.

Nabi ﷺ further says that the mercy of Allah will envelop that reciter or student of the Qur’an. This mercy makes it easy to say no to sin. Nabi ﷺ would make dua that O Allah grant me your mercy, by enabling me to give up sins. He never sinned but he made this dua to teach us that Allah’s mercy will make it easy for us to give up sinful disobedience. Thus the barakah of the Qur’an is that tranquillity descends then Allah’s mercy which in turn, makes worshipful obedience easier.

Nabi ﷺ then says that the angels also envelop that gathering of the Qur’an. The effects of this are that angelic qualities will rub onto the hearts of those in the gathering too. The deception of the dunya is that a man in an illicit relationship will call his girlfriend an angel. She is no angel for him, even our language is a deception. For believers, when Allah gives us the tawfiq to do amal, that attracts real angels to our gatherings and their presence has a positive effect on us.

Lastly, Nabi ﷺ mentioned that Allah makes mention of these reciters of the Qur’an to those who are with Allah. Mullah Ali Qari رحمة الله عليه says that Allah mentions this to the senior angels who are very close to Allah, and to the souls of all the Prophets and the Messengers عليهم السلام. So imagine that you are sitting here in masjid reciting Qur’an and Allah is telling them that Muhammad the son of so-and-so, is sitting in such-and-such masjid reciting the Qur’an, what a great honour that would be!

Hazrat Ml. Muhammad Zakariyya رحمة الله عليه said, if we had to spend our entire lives to acquire just one of these virtues, it would have been well worth the effort. Yet how fortunate are we, that Allah is willing to give us all of them if we fulfill his conditions first. Therefore, we should never consider recitation and taleem of the Qur’an a light matter. Shaikhul Hind رحمة الله عليه was imprisoned in Malta for 4 years. Upon release, his first advice was to make taleem. He explained that the downfall of the Ummah is due to us being distanced from the Qur’an. He then made it his life mission to open up classes and reconnect people to the word of Allah.

The teacher of Maulana Qasim Seema رحمة الله عليه was Maulana Badriharam رحمة الله عليه. In 1958, one of his students went for Hajj. During his visit to Madinah Munawwarah, he was so touched being close to Nabi ﷺ that he decided to stay there. He made this intention and back in those days, it was easy to settle in Madinah Munawwarah too. However, that night he had a dream of Nabi ﷺ. Nabi ﷺ told him that you going back home and sitting on the mimbar of any masjid in your area teaching the Qur’an, is better than staying here and spending 20 years besides me.

May Allah enable us to really understand these great virtues of the Qur’an and may this understanding become a means of our guidance, Aameen.

What do we do after Ramadan? 4 tips on how to keep going

During Ramadan, our constant worry is how will we maintain this momentum and worship schedule after Ramadan? We must understand that Ramadan is a spiritual month which changes our mood and strengthens our focus on deen. With this month comes a special form of tawfiq/God-given strength, making us more spiritually energetic and more able than usual. Thus outside of Ramadan, it is not possible to maintain that all.

The same applies for Umrah; during Umrah people can get by on less food. What you eat during Umrah, try to eat the same foods back home and you will see how difficult it is to get by! And why is that the case? It is because in Haramain Shareefain, during Ramadan e.t.c there is a lot of nooraaniyat and this has a spiritual effect on us. For those who doubt religion, this experience itself authenticates our deen further.

However naturally, that effect begins to dwindle once we leave Haramain Shareefain, or once Ramadan is over. Therefore, we cannot continue that level of worship but what we must do is increase the worship we did before Ramadan started. To be specific, there are a few areas we should prioritise:

1. Tilawat of the Quran: Increase it but do not make unrealistic goals otherwise, we will burn out very quickly. Increase slowly but surely as the actions Allah loves most are those which are done consistently, even if they are little.

2. Sunnahs: Learn masnoon duas, read a few extra per day, add a few extra Sunnahs per day into your timetable. This is true taraqqi/spiritual progress.

3. Character: This is the department we need the most improvement in. Remember that the weightiest deed on the scales on the Day of Judgement will be good character. Not worship, good character! And bad character, that will contaminate even our good deeds! When we do Qurbani and remove the liver, if you do not take out the poison bag properly without it spilling then although liver is delicacy, the taste will become spoiled. If it goes on the carcass, that too will become spoiled. But if it is removed carefully, everything will be safe. Bad character is like that poison bag, if we are not careful it will spoil even our good deeds.

4. Quality of Salah: Yes in Ramadan we are more focused but now that it has gone for another year, we cannot allow our focus in Salah to vanish for another year too! Make an effort to improve that too.

Now with regards to these four points, how can we practically ensure that we are improving? By managing our time correctly. We have to be systematic in all that we do. Have a plan of action and execute it. In madrassa, school or work, our day is timetabled allowing us to get a lot of work done. Outside of this, we must timetable our day too. If you sit in traffic on the way to work, turn off the radio and make some dhikr, recite durood or play Surah Yasin on a CD and memorise it.

If you have a few spare moments at work, finish off your adhkaar for the day. In other words, identify the time you are using which can be used even more, capitalize on that time and profit further. Once you make such a timetable, stick to it and at the end of the day look through and see how much you have completed. If you have left some out, finish it off before you sleep.

Otherwise, our nafs will get the better of us and one day off will lead to several days off adhkaar, which will eventually turns to weeks and then months, and that is how good habits die overtime. But if we structure our day, centre it around worship and slowly improve on the four points listed above, then inshaAllah we will continue to ascend out of Ramadan just like we did within it.

Ramadan: A month of Reflection

Ramadan is a month of reflection, a time to rectify our hearts, families and homes. We can sit for hours watching a movie or the build up to a football game but can we spend that long reading the Quran? Or an Islamic book? If not, then this month is an opportunity to change that, to develop and increase our love for deen. Shaytan is caged up, the mist is cleared, the path becomes clearer so think, reflect and act.

Immerse yourself in the love of Allah, and this will give you the spiritual strength to combat sins. I was going to apply for something the other day but I thought to myself that they will give me forms to fill out. Therefore, if I apply now I will have to spend some portion of Ramadan engaged in this work. Why do it in Ramadan when I can do it later? So I left it and if Allah gives me life, then I will do it in Shawwal.

We must look into our lives and the minor duties that can wait, put them on hold otherwise we will lose focus. Usually, we suggest balancing between our worldly and religious duties. But during Ramadan we exert ourselves as much as possible. It is the month of action. So whilst usually it is good to attend islamic lectures in Ramadan, our main focus should be individual worship.

The Ummahatul Mumineen have said that Nabi صلي الله عليه وسلم would tighten his waistbelt in the last 10 days of Ramadan, spending His nights in prayer and keeping His family awake to do the same. If a person undertakes physical labour, he tightens his belt to stop it falling while he works. So tightening one’s belt is a figure of speech, and in this hadeeth, it shows that Nabi صلي الله عليه وسلم would go that extra mile during this blessed month. He would spend so long leading salah, the Sahaaba رضي الله عنهم would fear missing suhoor.

That is a stark contrast to our community here in South Africa, where some people are busy searching for the masjid that leads taraweeh the quickest! And then we have men like Hafiz Ismail Jassat from Darul Uloom Azaadville, may Allah preserve Him. Last year in Taraweeh Salah, he read 29 juz’ in one rakah, and the last juz’ in the remaining 19 rakahs of Taraweeh.

We visited Darul Uloom Azaadville a few days ago and we met Hazrat Ml. Abdul Hamid Ishaq حفظه الله. As we ate lunch together he told us that whenever an area is secured in gauteng for an ijtima, Hafiz saab visits, walks around the area and recites the whole Quran. Then he ends by making dua..all in just one walk!

Another Maulana mentioned to Hazrat Ml. Abdul Hamid حفظه الله that this year, I would like to ask hafiz saab to read one whole Quran in the first rakah and read another in the next. SubhanAllah look at how they think. We wonder where the quickest Taraweeh is prayed, and their concern is how can we extend our prayers and increase our rewards? May Allah make us like them, Aameen.

Turn to Allah, become an ardent worshipper and lover of Allah. Life has no guarantee this world keeps changing so I ask you, what permanent benefit can a temporary world offer you? Buy and use worldly items, but do not become attached. Coming back to a few days ago when I saw my principal Hazrat Ml. Abdul Hamid Ishaq حفظه الله, he looked the exact same as he did twenty years ago.

He walks the same, talks the same and dresses the same because he has peace, contentment and happiness in his heart. So there is no need to change. But when you look at those who attach themselves to the dunya, they are constantly changing their hairstyle and dresscode. They do not know what they want, they are just following trends and changing every other day. There is no peace in that. But the Sunnah? You will always find peace in the Sunnah.

May Allah enable us to reach Ramadan and spend it in His obedience, Aameen.

Salah: A gift from Allah

There is no hadeeth stating that the 27th of Rajab/Shab-e-Meraj is a special night. Nabi صلي الله عليه وسلم never attached any virtue to it, therefore, neither should we. More people attend masaajid on this night than any other night, leaving Imaams with no choice but to cater for the community by addressing this issue. This is the only reason why some masaajid have programmes on this night, for educational purposes.

On the night of Meraj Nabi صلي الله عليه وسلم was taken from Makkah Mukarramah to Jerusalem to the Heavens, on a special animal named the Buraq. In the heavens he was taken all the way up to the throne of Allah, where He had a special conversation with the almighty. During this conversation, Allah gifted him with Salah. This whole night took place for one reason: So that Allah could gift this entire Ummah with Salah. Some of us give so much importance to this night, but how much importance do we give to Salah, the purpose behind the occurrence of Meraj?

The Sahaaba رضي الله عنهم may not have gathered and celebrated this night, but they – the Sahaaba رضي الله عنهم – never missed their Salah, they had their priorities right. They knew that the closest we can get to Allah in this world, is in Sujood. If a man is courting a lady and she tells him what time to phone/meet him, he may not get anything out of it, but he will follow suit. Due to his filthy love for his illicit beloved, he will sacrifice and take great risks to meet her secretly.
If we loved Allah as much as we ought to, then we would rush to meet Him at Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha. We would sacrifice our precious sleep and close our businesses on time just to meet and converse with Him.

Learning about the night of Meraj is good but the main lesson we should take from it, is the importance of Salah. Even on their wedding nights the Sahaaba رضي الله عنهم would seek permission from their brides to stand up for Nafl Salah. Nowadays people get married and miss their fardh Salah, but they would finish Isha Salah and then ask their wives for permission to perform Tahajjud. Salah in the life of a believer is like the position of the head on the body. According to the ahnaaf/hanafis, a man who misses out Salah intentionally must be taken to prison and kept there until he reforms. This is the lightest ruling. Other scholars say that a person leaves the fold of Islam, that is how strict they were in this regard.

There are some people who pray but they have mature children sitting at home, missing prayers. This is incorrect, we must encourage them too. Once Nabi صلي الله عليه وسلم said that I would like to order someone to give adhaan, someone to lead the prayer, and a group of young people to collect firewood. He then said that I will go house to house checking if there are any males missing Salah. If they do so for invalid reasons, I would’ve burnt their houses down had it not been for their women and children living there.

I ask you, bearing the above in mind, how many homes would have been burnt in our times? We may not have a fire kindled with matches, but now our houses are burning with a different kind of fire. Every household has some problem, struggle or worry. There is no peace left and us collectively missing Salah is definitely one reason why. On the day of Judgement, Salah will be reckoned first before any other good or bad deed. If our Salah is well and ordered then everything else will fall into place, our reckoning will become easier. But if it’s weak or absent then we will struggle through our reckoning. Imaan will weaken in a person who misses His Salah.

Pray, and advise your families to pray too. Make an intention that I will never miss a single Salah. InshaAllah, Allah will make you successful in your worldly endeavours and the path to Jannah will be made easy for you. May Allah bless us with His Jannah Aameen. The Sahaaba رضي الله عنهم asked Nabi صلي الله عليه وسلم that how will you recognise your Ummatis on the day of Judgement, when there will be so many people there? Nabi صلي الله عليه وسلم replied that if a man has horses with beautiful, white spots amongst a group of black horses, would he not recognise his horses? The Sahaaba رضي الله عنهم replied that certainly, O Messenger of Allah! Nabi صلي الله عليه وسلم replied that my followers will come with white faces and the limbs they washed in Whudu will be shining bright.

That is our ID. On that day, that is how Nabi صلي الله عليه وسلم will recognise us. So make an effort to pray. Usually in the event of a small life problem, the first casualty is our Salah. That should not be the case. Yes life gets busy but if it is important to you, you will find a way. Otherwise, you will find an excuse.

Hazrat’s reflections on his Umrah trip

Hazrat went for Umrah and returned a few days ago. On 10/4/2017 in his dhikr majlis, Hazrat shared His reflections on the journey and lessons that we can all benefit from. Below is a written summary of that majlis. When the full audio is uploaded on taqwa.co, we will link it here inshaAllah

Hazrat Ml. Yunus Patel رحمة الله عليه would say that if you go to Niagara falls with a bucket, you can collect plenty of water within seconds. However, your bucket will never fill if you were to hold it upside down, even if you stood there for years. Haramain Shareefain has so much anwaraat, Islam spread from these places. The seeds of deen were planted in Makkah Mukarramah, watered with blood and sacrifice, but the flowers bloomed in Madinah Munawwarah.

The fragrance of these flowers were so strong, it reached the four corners of the world. Now, if Allah allows us to visit the source of the fragrance of Islam and it does not permeate and change our hearts, then we must really question, what is wrong with us? This fragrance is so strong it has changed the world, why then are we not impacted?

We intended having some programmes in Madina Munawarrah but when we arrived the hotel was full, and none of the people who I travelled with had an apartment to accommodate. In the midst of this dilemma, we left to visit the haram and I came across a brother there who was from South Africa too.

I did not recognise him but he approached me and reminded me how we met years ago. Then he told me that he had an apartment with big rooms and he would be happy for us to conduct our programmes there. He gave us exactly what we needed. SubhanAllah…do you see how if you make a small effort, Allah will open the doors for you? He will create the means for you, we just have to try and put our trust in Him.

We have it so easy compared to those that came before us. For example, yesterday we left Madina Munawwarah and after some delays, we reached home around 24 hours later. We felt tired but it made me wonder how kind Allah is. We left yesterday and we returned home today. In the prophetic era, they travelled for months on camels with little food. Our akaabireen would travel on donkey or by ship for many weeks before reaching their destination. Travel was not easy, you can read these stories in ‘Aap Beti’. They had to make such great sacrifices but for us, we have it easy. We must thank Allah for this.

Whilst we were there, in the programmes in Madinah Munawwarah one of the points we mentioned was about taking gifts home. Most parents that come here desire to take gifts back home for their children. We tend to buy scarves, toys, gadgets or other items for them. But the speciality of the holy lands is that it caused Imaan, deen and the Sunnah to spread across the world, therefore, these are the greatest gifts we can bring back for our children. We visited haramain shareefain to change, so bring this change home. Constantly ask yourself that am I improving in deen? Am I bringing new Sunnahs into my life?

Out of love many people focus on the structures and buildings there, but these big mimbars were not present during the prophetic era. The Sahaaba رضي الله عنهم did not see them yet their hearts were filled with love for deen because their focus was on Allah and His rasool, not the buildings and their structures. Nowadays people say they are ‘die-hard’ Manchester United fans, but as believers our concern must be: are we die-hard followers and lovers of Nabi ﷺ?

If we are, then everything in Madina Munawarrah will become beloved to us. Before leaving Madina Munawwarah Hazrat رحمة الله عليه would always say: O land of Madina Munawarrah! If only I could put you in my eyes. You are a Jannat of Nabi ﷺ. May Allah bless us and make us amongst those who love and follow Him.

In our hotel we met a brother from Paris. He was a young man who told us that his heart feels very heavy leaving such a beautiful place. Speaking to him made me think that in life, there are many types of sugars that one can consume but until you do not mix it with something, you cannot enjoy its sweetness. Likewise, the love of Nabi ﷺ has to be mixed in our lives and shown in our actions. Then, its sweetness will enter our hearts in the right proportion. But if we do not follow the Sunnah and just claim to be lovers, we will eventually fall into bidat.

Therefore, this love may be sweet but it will become detrimental for our spiritual health, just like a teaspoon of sugar may be sweet but it is detrimental for your physical health, because it is an overload of sweetness. Like this young man naturally, we will all leave with a heavy heart but we must remember to direct our love towards following the beloved.

Don’t just accumulate the sugar by listening to dhikr and poetry and desiring to enter into a state of ecstasy or kafiyyat. That is not the goal, the goal is to follow the practical lessons, to mix it in our lives and the result will be adhering more to the Sunnah.

Another great lesson we learnt there is that a believer must have himmat. He must muster the courage and will power to change and then Allah will grant him the ability to do so. Umrah can be challenging but like everything in life, the determined ones will find a way to overcome it, the rest will find an excuse to avoid it.

May Allah grant us the tawfiq to follow the Sunnah and to implement these lessons, Aameen.
